According to the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), there are three main things you can do to prepare against the anticipated pandemic outbreaks of H1N1 'the Swine Flu' (2nd more potent wave coming in the fall of 2009) and in the future, H5N1 'the Bird Flu'.
- Obtain Anti-Virals. There are two products currently available on the market, Tamiflu and Relenza. Fortunately, both of these anti-viral medications can be purchased directly from your physician in his/her office (if they are participating in the in-office dispensing program with VantageRx).
- Obtain Masks. (see below)
- Obtain alcohol based Hand Sanitizers. You can purchase these at most grocery stores and other retail outlets.
As explained in the video, there are three types of respirators (masks) from which to choose.
GPU/Surgical Mask (model 1400)
The FDA has stated that no other masks will provide prevention without having to have a "fit test" performed and official training on how to don a mask (such as N95 rated masks, N100, dust masks, surgical masks, 3-ply masks, etc.) except FDA cleared GPU (general public usage) masks.
N95 Surgical Respirator (model GS 1400). This mask, which is available to the public through this website, retails for $31.95 per box (20 masks), yet with the professional medical discount code, it is available through your physician or organization at a discount. This product is NIOSH approved, rated N95. This mask is FDA approved for "surgical attire". The actual tests showed an average leakage of .0269%. This mask is effectively equivalent to a N99.9731
Pasture Pharma (model F550G). This mask is currently on backorder for the USA.
3M (model 8670F). 3M distributors charge various prices per mask.
Anti-Microbial Nano Bi-Directional Mask (model NT-V2)
This respirator is the next generation of masks (not yet approved by the FDA) and was designed for “first responders”. Through nano technology, combining 5 natural elements, this new fiber neutralizes "kills" the cell membranes of all bacteria and viruses on contact. NASA has tested one of the proprietary elements contained in the fiber against the equivalent of Anthrax, and within 15 minutes, all spoors’ membrane cells were neutralized.
This mask is very easy to breathe through because of its “duck” shape and angle of the 7 layers of material, therefore, it is perfect for sick victims. Because the 7-layer material is bi-directional, a practical application is that you can put a mask on your sick child (adult size mask), and the other children will not get their sickness. Another practical application is that you can wear the mask 24 hours in a row. Unlike other masks which need to be replaced after 2 hours of use (because of bacteria causing the worst “morning breath” you have ever had), this mask nuetralizes all bacteria, so it is like breathing fresh oxygen.
The Department of Home Land Security and the Mexican government has purchased this particular mask. This mask retails for $79.95 per box (20 masks), yet with the professional medical discount code, it is available through your physician for organization at a discount.
NIOSH N95 Mask (model TAF1200)
This respirator is a standard NIOSH approved N95 respirator (the kind of mask typically worn by medical staff and emergency personnel to protect themselves against contacting/spreading viruses). These masks are not cleared by the FDA for the general public use (meaning that you do not need to obtain a fit test or instructions to learn how to don a mask), because OSHA requires all medical personnel to received a fit test.
How long do I need to wear a mask for a pandemic?
The viruses come in “waves”. They cover an area for about 2 weeks, then leave for a time, then return again. Most experts agree that the average pandemic outbreak comes and goes over a 60-day period. Most viruses “live” in the air for around 2 hours. They travel about 5 yards. When outside, you do not know who walked by in the past 2 hours where you are located, therefore, you need to protect yourself and wear the mask whenever you go outside during a pandemic outbreak. Inside, your family members need to wear a mask for about seven days. If no one shows any signs of contracting a flu, then it will be safe inside your home (as long as no one else enters your home, or if they do, they should wear the nano mask before entering your home).
How long does a mask last?
The NT-V2 mask lasts for over 24 hours, whereas the average life efficiency of an N95 mask is only 2 hours. Health professionals can wear the same mask for 8 hours a day for three days before needing to replace it with a new mask.
How long can I store my mask, without usage, before I need to replace it?
You are safe to store the NT-V2 mask for 3 years. The GPU mask can be stored for 5 years. The N95 maks can be stored for 3 years.
